01What is the 30 x 30 x 4 mm angle profile?

What does this angle do that T-slot profile does not?

It gives you a solid, cheap corner without any groove geometry. A 30 x 30 x 4 mm angle bolted across a corner reinforces it and finishes the edge at the same time. For a display frame or a light guard, that is often all you need, and it is less expensive than a T-slot section of the same size.

How much load can it carry?

Not much. At 4 mm wall and 30 mm legs, the section modulus is about 1.6 cm3, so it is a light duty corner. It suits display frames, light panels and trim, not a loaded machine frame. As a brace, keep the length under about 0.7 m.

Is it 6061 or 6063?

6061-T6 is standard for this section. It is stronger than 6063-T5 and still anodises well. If you need to weld it, ask for 6063-T5 instead.

03Display frames and light guards

The 30 x 30 x 4 mm angle is the workhorse of display and exhibition frames. It is stiff enough to hold a panel, light enough to move, and its smooth corner reads as finished without a cover cap.

In every case the load is light and static. If the frame has to carry a person’s weight or a machine’s operating load, move up to the 50 x 50 x 9 mm or larger.

04Cutting accuracy and mitre joints

The one place a light angle goes wrong is the cut angle. A display frame with mitred corners only looks right if the cuts are within half a degree, otherwise the corners show a visible gap or a step.

JointCutRequired accuracyWhy it matters
Square butt joint90 degree square+/-0.5 mm lengthpanels sit flush
Mitred corner45 degree mitre+/-0.5 degreesno visible corner gap
Brace ends45 degree both ends+/-0.5 degreesbrace seats on both faces

We cut on a CNC saw, so the 45 degree mitre is held to +/-0.5 degrees. If the frame is anodised after cutting, the anodising fills the cut face and the corner reads as a single line.

05Load limits and span guidance

UseMax loadMax spanNotes
Display panel cornerup to 5 kg per cornerframe under 1.2 mstatic load only
Light guard frameup to 10 kg totalframe under 1.5 madd a mid rail
Shelf supportup to 15 kg per shelfshelf under 0.6 muse two angles
Brace (compression)up to 1.5 kNunder 0.7 mshorten if buckling

These are indicative. The angle is forgiving for static display loads but reaches its limit quickly once a load is repeated or reversed. For anything dynamic, use a thicker wall or a T-slot section.

0630 x 30 x 4 vs 50 x 50 x 9

Choose the 30 x 30 x 4

  • The frame is a display, guard or trim, not a load path
  • Weight and cost per metre matter
  • The corner carries a light, static load
  • The frame is under 1.5 m and does not need bracing
  • The angle is also the visible trim

Choose the 50 x 50 x 9

  • The frame is a machine frame with a real load
  • The corner carries a medium moment
  • M8 bolts are needed (the 30 x 30 x 4 takes M5 or M6)
  • The frame is over 1.5 m and needs bracing
  • The angle is a gusset or brace, not a trim

07Failure modes to design out

What goes wrongWhy it happensDesign it out by

08What to check before you order

Procurement checklist for the 30 x 30 x 4 angle

  • Confirm the size and wall: 30 x 30 x 4 mm.
  • Confirm the alloy: 6061-T6 is standard; 6063-T5 for welding.
  • Confirm the cut length and end cuts: square or 45 degree mitre.
  • Confirm the hole pattern if drilled to drawing.
  • Confirm the finish: mill or anodised.
  • Confirm the quantity in metres or pieces.

09Terms used on this page

Equal leg angle
An L-section with both legs the same length.
Section modulus
A geometric property, in cm3, determining bending strength. The 30 x 30 x 4 mm has about 1.6 cm3.
Mitre joint
A corner where two members are cut at 45 degrees and meet at a right angle.
Brace
A diagonal member carrying axial load to stop a frame racking.
Buckling
Sudden sideways failure of a slender member under compression.

10Questions buyers ask

What is the 30 x 30 x 4 mm angle used for?

Display and exhibition frames, light guards, shelf supports and trim. It is a light duty solid corner section with no slot.

How much load can it carry?

Light, static loads: up to about 5 kg per corner on a display frame, or up to 15 kg per shelf when used in pairs.

What bolt sizes fit?

M5 and M6. The 4 mm wall is too thin for M8. Keep the hole at least 10 mm from the edge.

Can it be anodised?

Yes. Mill or anodised. Anodising after cutting fills the cut face and the corner reads as one line.

What is the weight per metre?

Approximately 0.60 kg/m for the 30 x 30 x 4 mm section.

What is the lead time?

One to two weeks for cutting and drilling, plus a week for anodising.

What we need to quote this section

  1. The size and wall: 30 x 30 x 4 mm.
  2. The alloy: 6061-T6 or 6063-T5.
  3. The cut length and end cuts (square or mitre).
  4. The hole pattern if drilled to drawing.
  5. The finish: mill or anodised.
  6. The quantity in metres or pieces.

Send those six items and the quotation comes back with the material, cutting, drilling and finish broken out separately. Browse the full aluminium profile catalogue and the angle profiles range.
