01What is the 50 x 50 x 9 mm angle bracket?

Why is the 50 x 50 x 9 mm the standard medium duty gusset?

Because it sits at the sweet spot between the light 30 x 30 x 4 mm trim and the heavy 100 x 100 x 15 mm brace. A 50 mm leg gives room for two M8 bolts per leg at proper spacing, and the 9 mm wall gives a section modulus around 12 cm3, enough for the corner moment of a typical 30 or 40 series frame.

Which frames does it suit?

The 30 and 40 series. The 50 mm leg spans across the corner of a 40 x 40 post and picks up the slot fixings on both faces. For the 20 series it is over-sized; for the 45 series and above it is usually under-sized and the 100 x 100 x 15 mm is used instead.

Is it a cast bracket or cut angle?

It is cut lengths of 50 x 50 x 9 mm angle, drilled to your drawing. The advantage over a cast bracket is that the hole pattern is fully customisable and the section is available in any length for use as a short gusset or a longer brace.

03Bolt layout and torque

The 50 mm leg takes two bolts per leg at a 30 mm spacing with a 10 mm edge distance. For a 9 mm aluminium wall, the bolt torque is limited by the bearing strength of the aluminium, not the bolt.

Bolt sizeHole diameterMin edge distanceMax torque
M66.5 mm12 mm6 Nm
M89 mm16 mm12 Nm

The torque figures are for a dry, lubricated-free joint. Overtightening an M8 bolt in a 9 mm wall aluminium angle will deform the hole. If you need more clamp force, use a longer bracket or a second bolt rather than more torque.

04Gusset or brace: two ways to use the 50 x 50 x 9

The same section works two ways. As a gusset, it is a short length bolted across a corner. As a brace, it is a longer length cut at 45 degrees on both ends and spanning the corner.

For a brace, the 50 x 50 x 9 mm is limited to about 1.2 m in length before buckling under compression. For longer braces, step up to the 100 x 100 x 15 mm.

0550 x 50 x 9 vs 100 x 100 x 15: which one?

Choose the 50 x 50 x 9

  • The frame is 30 or 40 series and of standard size
  • The corner carries a medium moment, not a gantry load
  • M6 or M8 bolts are sufficient
  • Weight and cost per bracket matter
  • The bracket is a gusset or short brace

Choose the 100 x 100 x 15

  • The frame is large (over 2 m) or a gantry
  • The corner carries a heavy moment or a loaded head
  • M10 bolts are needed for the joint
  • The brace spans over 1.2 m
  • The bracket is a primary load path, not a reinforcement

07What to check before you order

Procurement checklist for the 50 x 50 x 9 angle

  • Confirm the leg length and wall: 50 x 50 x 9 mm.
  • Confirm the hole pattern: bolt size, spacing and edge distance. Send a drawing.
  • Confirm the end cuts: square for a gusset, 45 degree for a brace.
  • Confirm the finish: mill or anodised, matched to the frame.
  • Confirm the quantity and length for gussets or braces.
  • Confirm the alloy: 6061-T6 is standard; 6063-T5 for welding.

08Terms used on this page

Gusset
A bracket that reinforces a corner joint, spreading the load across a larger area than the corner itself.
Section modulus
A geometric property, in cm3, determining bending strength. The 50 x 50 x 9 mm has about 12 cm3.
Edge distance
The distance from a bolt hole centre to the nearest edge, at least 2x the hole diameter in aluminium.
Bearing strength
The load the aluminium around a bolt hole can carry before it deforms or tears.
Brace
A diagonal member that carries axial load to stop a frame racking.

09Questions buyers ask

Which frame series does the 50 x 50 x 9 mm suit?

The 30 and 40 series. The 50 mm leg spans the corner of a 40 x 40 post and picks up the slot fixings. For the 45 series, use the 100 x 100 x 15 mm.

Can the holes be drilled to my pattern?

Yes. The angle is supplied as cut lengths and drilled to your drawing, with the bolt size, spacing and edge distance you specify.

What bolt torque should I use?

Up to 6 Nm for M6 and 12 Nm for M8 in the 9 mm wall. Overtightening deforms the hole.

What is the weight per metre?

Approximately 2.3 kg/m for the 50 x 50 x 9 mm section.

Can it be anodised?

Yes. Mill or anodised. Specify a single run to match the frame colour.

What is the lead time?

One to two weeks for cutting and drilling, plus a week for anodising.

What we need to quote this bracket

  1. The drawing showing the angle and hole pattern.
  2. The bolt size and the number of holes per leg.
  3. The cut length and quantity.
  4. The end cuts: square or 45 degree mitre.
  5. The finish: mill or anodised.
  6. The alloy: 6061-T6 or 6063-T5.

Send those six items and the quotation comes back with the material, cutting, drilling and finish broken out separately. Browse the full aluminium profile catalogue and the angle profiles range.

Need this medium duty corner quoted against your drawing?

Send the drawing, the hole pattern and the finish. We quote material, cutting, drilling and anodising as separate lines.
