Because it sits at the sweet spot between the light 30 x 30 x 4 mm trim and the heavy 100 x 100 x 15 mm brace. A 50 mm leg gives room for two M8 bolts per leg at proper spacing, and the 9 mm wall gives a section modulus around 12 cm3, enough for the corner moment of a typical 30 or 40 series frame.
The 30 and 40 series. The 50 mm leg spans across the corner of a 40 x 40 post and picks up the slot fixings on both faces. For the 20 series it is over-sized; for the 45 series and above it is usually under-sized and the 100 x 100 x 15 mm is used instead.
It is cut lengths of 50 x 50 x 9 mm angle, drilled to your drawing. The advantage over a cast bracket is that the hole pattern is fully customisable and the section is available in any length for use as a short gusset or a longer brace.
| Item | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Leg length | 50 mm both legs | equal leg angle |
| Wall | 9 mm | medium duty |
| Section modulus | approx. 12 cm3 | per principal axis |
| Holes | M6 or M8 to drawing | two per leg typical |
| Alloy | 6061-T6 | EN AW-6061 |
| Weight | approx. 2.3 kg/m | from published section |
| Standard | EN 755-9 / GB/T 6892 | wall tolerance +/-0.2 mm |
| Cut | saw cut, ends square or mitred | to +/-0.5 mm |
The 50 mm leg takes two bolts per leg at a 30 mm spacing with a 10 mm edge distance. For a 9 mm aluminium wall, the bolt torque is limited by the bearing strength of the aluminium, not the bolt.
| Bolt size | Hole diameter | Min edge distance | Max torque |
|---|---|---|---|
| M6 | 6.5 mm | 12 mm | 6 Nm |
| M8 | 9 mm | 16 mm | 12 Nm |
The torque figures are for a dry, lubricated-free joint. Overtightening an M8 bolt in a 9 mm wall aluminium angle will deform the hole. If you need more clamp force, use a longer bracket or a second bolt rather than more torque.
The same section works two ways. As a gusset, it is a short length bolted across a corner. As a brace, it is a longer length cut at 45 degrees on both ends and spanning the corner.
For a brace, the 50 x 50 x 9 mm is limited to about 1.2 m in length before buckling under compression. For longer braces, step up to the 100 x 100 x 15 mm.
| What goes wrong | Why it happens | Design it out by |
|---|---|---|
| Bolt tears out at the hole edge | edge distance is under 2x the hole diameter | keep the edge distance to the table in section 03 |
| Hole deforms from overtightening | torque exceeds the bearing strength of the 9 mm wall | keep M8 torque under 12 Nm, use more bolts instead |
| Bracket bends under corner moment | the bracket is under-sized for the load | check the section modulus, or use two brackets per corner |
| Brace buckles under compression | the brace is longer than 1.2 m | shorten the brace or step up to the 100 x 100 x 15 mm |
| Mismatched anodising | the bracket and frame are from different runs | specify a single anodising run for bracket and frame |
The 30 and 40 series. The 50 mm leg spans the corner of a 40 x 40 post and picks up the slot fixings. For the 45 series, use the 100 x 100 x 15 mm.
Yes. The angle is supplied as cut lengths and drilled to your drawing, with the bolt size, spacing and edge distance you specify.
Up to 6 Nm for M6 and 12 Nm for M8 in the 9 mm wall. Overtightening deforms the hole.
Approximately 2.3 kg/m for the 50 x 50 x 9 mm section.
Yes. Mill or anodised. Specify a single run to match the frame colour.
One to two weeks for cutting and drilling, plus a week for anodising.
