Because there is a class of frames that are too light even for the 20 series. Display cases, exhibition stands, small panel frames and instrument housings do not need M5 or M6 fasteners — M4 is enough, and the frame needs to be as light and as small as possible. The 15 series fills that niche. At 0.55 kg/m and with M4 fasteners, it is the lightest multi-slot section in the T-slot range.
The 15 mm thickness is too small for a slot on every face. The 30 mm face carries one slot, and one of the two 15 mm faces carries another. The third slot is on the second 15 mm face, giving three total. The remaining 15 mm face is a solid face with no slot — it is used as the visible or mounting face where a clean surface is preferred over a fixing position.
Very low. The second moment of area is about 0.1 cm4 on the strong axis and 0.03 cm4 on the weak axis. A 1 m beam under a 30 N centre load deflects about 1.5 mm. The 15 series is for display and light enclosure applications, not for structural frames. If you need to carry load, step up to the 20 series.
| Item | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Envelope | 30 x 15 mm rectangular | width 30 mm, thickness 15 mm |
| Slots | 3 | 6 mm groove, 6.2 mm mouth, 15 mm pitch |
| Slot layout | 1 per 30 mm face, 1 on a single 15 mm face | asymmetric |
| Central bore | none typically | section is too small for a bore |
| Wall | approx. 1.2 mm at slot lip | thinnest in the T-slot range |
| Weight | approx. 0.55 kg/m | from published specification |
| Alloy | 6063-T5 | EN AW-6063 |
| Standard | EN 755-9 / GB/T 6892 | wall tolerance +/-0.15 mm |
| Length | 6 m stock | cut to drawing to +/-0.5 mm |
The 1.2 mm wall at the slot lip is the thinnest in the T-slot range. Per-slot pull-out for an M4 nut is about 0.25 kN, and for an M5 nut about 0.35 kN. These are low figures — the 15 series is not for joints under tension.
The 15 series is the lightest multi-slot section in the range. It is chosen when the frame weight and size matter more than the load capacity. Three applications cover most of what it does:
In all three, the 15 series is chosen because the load is light, the space is tight, and M4 fasteners are enough. If any of those change, the 20 series is the next step up.
The short answer is: very little. The section modulus is tiny, and the wall at the slot lip is only 1.2 mm. The table below gives the practical load limits for a simply supported beam at various spans.
| Span (mm) | Deflection at 20 N centre load | Deflection at 50 N centre load |
|---|---|---|
| 200 | 0.04 mm | 0.10 mm |
| 300 | 0.13 mm | 0.33 mm |
| 500 | 0.60 mm | 1.50 mm |
| 750 | 2.0 mm | 5.1 mm |
| 1000 | 4.8 mm | 12.0 mm |
As a rule of thumb, a 30 x 15 member used as a beam should not span more than 300 mm without an intermediate support. Beyond that, even modest loads produce visible deflection. The 15 series is a frame section, not a beam section.
The 6 mm groove and 6.2 mm mouth accept the 15 series accessory range: M4 slot nuts, M5 slot nuts (with a snug fit), hammer head T-bolts, cover strips and small hinges. The groove is narrower than the 20 series 6.2 mm groove, so 20 series nuts will not fit without modification.
| Fastener | Groove fit | Pull-out force | Typical torque |
|---|---|---|---|
| M4 slot nut | 6 mm groove, snug | approx. 0.25 kN | 1 to 2 Nm |
| M5 slot nut | 6 mm groove, snug | approx. 0.35 kN | 2 Nm |
| M4 T-bolt | 6 mm groove, hammer head | approx. 0.25 kN | 1 to 2 Nm |
| M5 T-bolt | 6 mm groove, hammer head | approx. 0.35 kN | 2 Nm |
The pull-out figures are estimates based on the 1.2 mm wall at the slot lip. They are lower than any other T-slot series. For any joint under tension, use a through-bolt if the section has a bore, or switch to the 20 series.
| What goes wrong | Why it happens | Design it out by |
|---|---|---|
| Slot nut pulls out under load | the 1.2 mm wall gives only 0.25 kN pull-out | do not use the slots for structural tension; use adhesives or external clamps |
| Beam deflects too much | the second moment of area is only 0.1 cm4 | keep spans under 300 mm or add intermediate supports |
| Frame racks under lateral load | M4 corner joints are very weak | use corner brackets or gusset plates at every joint |
| Slot nut deforms the groove lip | overtightening an M5 nut in a 1.2 mm wall groove | keep torque under 2 Nm; use M4 nuts for preference |
| Profile bends under its own weight at long lengths | 0.55 kg/m is light but the section is very flexible | support every 500 mm, or use the 20 series for long members |
No. The 15 series has a 6 mm groove, narrower than the 20 series 6.2 mm groove. 20 series nuts will not seat properly. Use 15 series M4 or M5 slot nuts.
About 300 mm without an intermediate support. Beyond that, deflection under even a small load becomes visible. For longer spans, use the 20 series or add a support.
The 15 series has a 6 mm groove and accepts M4 fasteners. It is for display cases and light enclosures. The 20 series has a 6.2 mm groove, M5 and M6 fasteners, and is the smallest practical section for functional frames.
Approximately 0.55 kg/m, from the published product specification.
Yes. Clear, black, champagne and bronze are standard anodised colours at 10 to 15 micron. Mill finish is available for hidden frames.
Typically two to three weeks for mill finish, with anodising adding about a week.
