01What is the 60 x 20 mm eight slot profile?

Why would you need eight slots on a 20 series profile?

Because the wide 60 mm face gives you room for four slots side by side, and the two 20 mm faces each carry two more. That gives a total of eight slots on a section that is still only 20 mm thick. The point is not strength, it is density of fixing positions. On a standard 20 x 20 four-slot, each face has one slot. On this profile, the wide face has four, which means you can mount a panel, route a cable and attach a sensor clip on the same member without sharing a slot.

Is it stronger than the 20 x 20 four-slot?

About the same in bending along the weak axis, and stiffer along the strong axis. The 60 mm width gives a higher second moment of area when the profile is used as a beam with the 60 mm face horizontal, but the wall thickness between slots is still only about 1.5 mm, so per-slot pull-out is the same as the 20 x 20. It is not a structural upgrade, it is a multi-function upgrade.

What fasteners fit?

The full 20 series M5 range: slot nuts, T-bolts, cover strips and hinges. No M6 nuts because the 6.2 mm groove is the same as the standard 20 series.

03Slot assignment: the three-in-one principle

The reason to use an eight-slot rail instead of a standard four-slot is slot assignment: dedicating each slot to a different function so they do not interfere with each other. On the wide face, the four slots are typically assigned as follows:

SlotPosition on wide faceTypical assignment
Slot 1outermost leftpanel fixing
Slot 2inner leftcable channel or pneumatic line
Slot 3inner rightsensor or actuator clip
Slot 4outermost rightbracket or structural tie

The two narrow faces each carry two slots, which are used for perpendicular mounting: a bracket that ties this rail to a 20 x 20 post, or a hinge for an access door. With this assignment, one rail does the work of three separate profiles: a structural member, a cable trunk and a sensor mount.

04Bending performance: wide face vs narrow face

The 60 x 20 section is directional. When the 60 mm face is horizontal (strong axis), the second moment of area is about 1.4 cm4, roughly seven times the 20 x 20. When the 20 mm face is horizontal (weak axis), it drops to about 0.2 cm4, the same as the 20 x 20.

OrientationI (cm4)Deflection at 50 N, 1 m span
60 mm face horizontal (strong)approx. 1.40.11 mm
20 mm face horizontal (weak)approx. 0.20.80 mm

That means the rail should always be used with the 60 mm face as the loaded face in bending. Used the other way, it is no stiffer than a 20 x 20, which defeats the point of the wider section.

05What you give up: per-slot pull-out and wall material

The eight-slot rail has the same 1.5 mm wall at the slot lip as the standard 20 x 20. Adding more slots does not make each slot stronger, it just gives you more of them. The trade is that the material between slots is thin, and the section’s overall material distribution is less efficient than a four-slot of the same weight.

Property20 x 20 four-slot60 x 20 eight-slotChange
Slots48+100 per cent
Weight (kg/m)approx. 0.62approx. 0.48-23 per cent
I strong axis (cm4)approx. 0.2approx. 1.4+600 per cent
I weak axis (cm4)approx. 0.2approx. 0.2same
Per-slot pull-out (kN)approx. 0.5approx. 0.5same

The weight per metre is lower than the 20 x 20 because the section is thinner relative to its width. More material is in the walls between the eight slots, but less is in the solid core. The net weight is lower.

06Choosing between the eight-slot rail and alternatives

Choose the eight-slot rail

  • A single member has to carry cable, panel and sensor at the same time
  • The frame needs a wide flat mounting surface for panels
  • Slot density per metre matters more than per-slot strength
  • You want to eliminate an external cable trunk
  • The 60 mm face can be the loaded face in bending (strong axis)

Choose the standard four-slot

  • The member spans between supports and needs four strong faces
  • You need per-slot pull-out higher than 0.5 kN
  • The frame only needs one fixing per face
  • Cost per metre is the primary driver
  • You need the widest range of accessories on all four faces

07Failure modes to design out

What goes wrongWhy it happensDesign it out by
Slot nut pulls out under loadthe 1.5 mm wall is the same as the 20 x 20use the central bore for structural tension, not the slots
Rail deflects when used on the weak axisthe 20 mm face has only 0.2 cm4always orient the 60 mm face as the bending face
Cable and bracket interfere in adjacent slotsthe 20 mm pitch is tight for two M5 fittings side by sidestagger fittings along the length, or use the narrow-face slots
Cover strips do not seat across the wide facefour slots on one face leaves no flat land for a single stripuse individual cover strips per slot, or leave service slots open
Rail twists under torsionthe thin walls and wide section have low torsional constantadd cross-bracing or use the rail only in bending, not torsion

08What to check before you order

Procurement checklist for the eight-slot rail

  • Confirm the slot assignment: which slots carry cable, panel and sensor. Put it on the drawing.
  • Confirm the orientation: the 60 mm face must be the loaded face in bending. If the frame uses it the other way, redesign.
  • Confirm the cut length and tolerance. Standard cut is +/-0.5 mm.
  • Confirm the finish: mill for hidden use, anodised for exposed service.
  • Confirm the quantity in metres. A 6 m bar yields ten 580 mm rails.
  • If the rail carries torsion, add cross-bracing. The wide thin section twists easily.

09Terms used on this page

Slot assignment
Dedicating each slot on a multi-slot profile to a specific function (cable, panel, sensor) to prevent interference.
Strong axis
The bending orientation that gives the higher second moment of area. On the 60 x 20, it is with the 60 mm face horizontal.
Weak axis
The bending orientation with the lower second moment of area. On the 60 x 20, it is with the 20 mm face horizontal.
Slot density
The number of T-slots per metre of profile length. The eight-slot has four per 60 mm of width on the wide face.
Cable trunk
An external enclosure for routing cables along a frame. The eight-slot rail eliminates the need for one by using a slot.

10Questions buyers ask

Can I use standard 20 series accessories in the eight-slot rail?

Yes. All eight slots use the same 6.2 mm groove and 6 mm mouth as the standard 20 series, so M5 slot nuts, T-bolts, cover strips and hinges all fit.

What is the difference between this and the 20 x 20 four-slot?

Same groove and mouth. The 60 x 20 has eight slots instead of four, a 60 mm wide face instead of 20 mm, and weighs 0.48 kg/m vs 0.62 kg/m. It is wider and lighter, with more fixing positions but the same per-slot strength.

Is it available with M6 grooves?

No. The 6.2 mm groove is the 20 series standard and only fits M5 fasteners. For M6 grooves, use the 30 series.

What is it used for?

Frames where a single rail has to carry cable routing, panel mounting and sensor attachment at the same time, without adding a second profile or an external cable trunk.

What is the weight per metre?

Approximately 0.48 kg/m, from the published product specification.

Can it be anodised?

Yes. Clear, black, champagne and bronze at 10 to 15 micron.
