01What is the 45 x 45 mm Type B two slot profile?

What does Type B mean?

It refers to the slot arrangement. In a Type A two-slot section, the two slots are on adjacent faces, 90 degrees apart. In a Type B section, the two slots are on opposite faces, 180 degrees apart. The Type B layout is for guidance: the two slots face each other and can carry a pair of parallel rails or bearings, while the solid faces in between are used for the drive or the mounting datum.

Why is the 45 series different from the 40 series?

The 45 series has a 10 mm mouth and a 10.2 mm groove, larger than the 40 series 8 mm mouth. That means it takes M10 accessories instead of M8, giving higher per-slot pull-out and a larger bearing surface for the nut. The 45 mm envelope is also slightly stiffer than 40 mm for the same wall.

When would I use a Type B two-slot over the four-slot?

When you need two facing slots and two clean solid faces. The four-slot has slots on all four faces, which wastes the faces you do not need and leaves no solid face to machine a datum or bolt a drive to. The Type B gives you the two slots you need and two solid faces to work with.

03Dual-rail guidance: the facing-slot layout

The Type B layout is built for dual-rail guidance. When you need two parallel rails on opposite sides of a section, the Type B gives you a slot on each face exactly where the rail mounts.

The key advantage is that the two slots are machined at a fixed 45 mm centre-to-centre distance by the die, so the two rails are automatically parallel to within the extrusion tolerance. You do not have to shim or align them.

04Parallelism and datum control

The two facing slots share the same die, so their parallelism is set at extrusion, typically within +/-0.1 mm over a metre. The two solid faces are then free to be machined as a datum surface, which is the reference for mounting the drive or the workpiece.

Slot mouth width10 mm nominalM10 nut engagement

If the stage needs the two slots to be machined to a tighter tolerance, the solid faces can be fly-cut after extrusion. Specify this on the drawing and it is quoted separately.

05Type A vs Type B: choosing the slot layout

Choose Type B (opposite slots)

  • You need two parallel rails facing each other
  • The two slots carry a pair of guides or rods
  • You want solid faces to machine a datum or mount a drive
  • The member is a bridge or cross-member between two rails
  • Parallelism between the two slots is built in by the die

Choose Type A (adjacent slots)

  • You need two slots on the same side of a corner
  • The member is a corner post with fixings on two adjacent faces
  • You want more fixing faces than two
  • The member carries a panel on one face and a rail on the next
  • You do not need a solid datum face

06What you give up vs the four-slot

The Type B has half the slots of the four-slot, but the material that would have gone into the two extra slots stays in the solid faces. That makes the Type B slightly stiffer in bending, and it gives you two clean faces for machining.

Solid faces02

M10 pull-out per slot (kN)approx. 2.5approx. 2.5

The weight is slightly lower on the Type B because the two solid faces carry less material than two extra slots would require. The per-slot pull-out is the same, since the slot geometry is identical.

07Failure modes to design out

What goes wrongWhy it happensDesign it out by
Rails lose parallelism under loadthe member twists under an off-centre drive forcemount the drive on the solid face, and support the member at close intervals
Nut pulls out at the rail jointthe M10 nut is overloaded at a single pointuse multiple nuts per rail, spaced along the slot
Datum face is not flat enoughthe as-extruded face is used without machiningspecify fly-cutting on the solid face if the stage needs a true datum
Member is installed 90 degrees outthe Type B is symmetric but the solid faces are not markedmark the datum face on the drawing and at installation
Slot and rail mismatchthe rail is sized for the 40 series 8 mm mouth, not the 45 series 10 mmconfirm the rail and accessory are 45 series (10 mm mouth) parts

08What to check before you order

Procurement checklist for the Type B two-slot

  • Confirm the slot layout: Type B has slots on opposite faces. If you need adjacent slots, specify Type A.
  • Confirm the accessory series: 45 series takes M10 nuts and a 10 mm mouth, not the 40 series M8.
  • Confirm whether the solid faces need machining as a datum. Specify fly-cutting if the stage needs it.
  • Confirm the cut length for matched pairs of rails, so both slots align.
  • Confirm the finish: mill for hidden use, anodised for exposed service.
  • Confirm the support spacing. For a guidance member, support it at close intervals to stop twist under drive force.

09Terms used on this page

Type B
A two-slot layout with the slots on opposite faces, 180 degrees apart. Used for dual-rail guidance.
Datum
A reference surface machined to a known flatness, used as the starting point for measurement and mounting.
Parallelism
The degree to which two surfaces or slots stay the same distance apart along their length.
Fly-cutting
A machining pass over a face to make it flat and parallel to a reference.
Linear stage
A guided platform that moves along a straight axis on rails and bearings.

10Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between Type A and Type B two-slot?

Type A has the two slots on adjacent faces (90 degrees apart); Type B has them on opposite faces (180 degrees apart). Type B is for dual-rail guidance, Type A for corner fixings on two adjacent faces.

What fasteners fit the 10 mm mouth?

M10 slot nuts, T-bolts and cover strips from the 45 series range. The 10 mm mouth is larger than the 40 series 8 mm mouth, so 40 series parts do not fit.

Can the solid faces be machined?

Yes. The two solid faces can be fly-cut to a datum, or drilled and tapped for a drive bracket. Specify the machining on the drawing.

Is it stiffer than the four-slot?

Slightly. The material that would form two extra slots stays in the solid faces, so the Type B is marginally stiffer in bending than the four-slot of the same envelope.

What is the weight per metre?

Approximately 2.30 kg/m, from the published product specification.

Can it be anodised?

Yes. Clear, black, champagne and bronze at 10 to 15 micron.
