Floor elements · Sealed base

This is the base plate for a 40 × 80 mm profile leg, and it is supplied with a gasket as standard. The gasket is the detail that separates it from a plain plate: it seals the open core of the profile against the plate, so water, coolant and swarf cannot enter the leg from the floor and travel up inside it.

On a frame in a wash-down area, a machine shop or an outdoor installation, an open profile core is a trap. Liquid that enters at the foot sits inside the extrusion and corrodes it from the inside, where it cannot be seen or cleaned. Sealing the base closes that path at the lowest point of the leg, which is where the water arrives.

Why the gasket matters more than the plate

A base plate on a rectangular 40 × 80 profile is bolted to the end taps and closes the end face. Without a gasket, the joint between the plate and the profile end is a capillary gap: liquid on the floor is drawn into it, and once inside the hollow core it has nowhere to drain and no airflow to dry it.

The result is a leg that looks sound from outside and is corroding on the inside. On an anodised profile the corrosion is slow but it is real, and it eventually reaches the bolts. A closed-cell gasket, compressed between the plate and the profile end by the plate bolts, stops the water at the joint.

Closed-cell EPDM gasketThe standard. It compresses to seal the joint, does not absorb water and tolerates the temperature range of a wash-down or outdoor installation.
Full-perimeter sealThe gasket is cut to the profile outline, not just the bolt holes, so it seals the whole end face including the slot mouths that open onto the end.
Bolt-hole bossesThe plate has bosses at the bolt positions so the bolts pass through the gasket without crushing it flat at those points.
Drain pathWhere the profile has to drain — a wash-down frame that is hosed down — the plate is supplied with a small drain hole rather than a full seal, so water that does enter can leave.

Rectangular legs and the tipping question

A 40 × 80 leg is stiffer in one direction than the other, and the base plate has to match that. The plate is rectangular and its long axis follows the long axis of the profile, so the extra bearing area is where the leg is stiffest and the tipping moment is highest.

On a frame where the 40 × 80 leg carries a load offset to one side, the plate should be oriented with the long axis in the direction of the load. We mark the plate and the recommended orientation on the drawing, and the gasket is cut to match so it cannot be fitted the wrong way round.

Practical point: if the frame is washed down, tell us. A sealed base plate traps water that gets in from above, so a wash-down frame normally needs a drain path at the base rather than a full seal — and occasionally a small drain hole drilled in the lowest point of the leg.

Frequently asked questions

Is the gasket fitted at the factory?

It is supplied loose with the plate and the bolts, so it cannot be damaged in transit. It is fitted during assembly and is held in position by the plate bolts.

Can I order the plate without the gasket?

Yes. For a dry indoor frame the gasket adds nothing and can be left off, which is the cheaper option.

Will the gasket stop the leg corroding?

It stops water entering at the base, which is the main path. A leg that is open at the top can still take water in there, so a top cap or a sealed joint is also needed on a wash-down frame.

Does the plate fit a 40 × 40 profile?

No, the hole pattern and the gasket are cut for the 40 × 80 section. A 40 × 40 leg takes the square base plate instead.

What anchor bolts suit the plate?

The four Ø11 mm holes take M10 anchors. The anchor type follows the floor: mechanical or chemical into a slab, a through-bolt with a spreader on a raised floor.

Tell us whether the frame is washed down

Send the profile section and tell us whether the frame is hosed down or outdoors. We will confirm whether the plate needs a seal or a drain path, and return FOB pricing within one working day.
